Project Overview
Care, practiced at street level.
Amazon CARES traces its beginnings in Loreto to the number and condition of street dogs around Iquitos. Its work grew to include veterinary care, animal welfare, public health, and education. Made alongside that work, Iquitos 09 records what those aims look like when they leave the language of a program and enter the street.
The photographs stay close to the labor: hands lifting and examining, animals held steady, transport improvised around heat, rain, and distance. Urgency is only part of the story. Waiting, repetition, and limited resources occupy just as much of the frame.
Iquitos is not treated as an exotic edge of the world, nor the Amazon as untouched wilderness. City, river, people, and animals share the same environment. The series is about responsibility within that proximity.
